Small flint grit is suitable for poultry, especially chicks and smaller species.

Flint grit should be offered separately to the feed and made available at all times. Chicks will help themselves to the grit as and when they need it. If chicks are being reared inside with no access to earth then flint grit is essential to aid gizzard function.

The gizzard of a bird is a highly muscular structure lined with a tough, abrasive keratin-like layer called koilin. The sandpaper-like grinding action is assisted by grits and stones deliberately ingested.

Allow free access to grits either:

• By giving in a dish pot or cup
• In a large tray or cage on the cage floor to provide an area where birds can peck and use natural foraging behaviour
