Mix Information
Info on our rat mixes & supplements.
We offer a wide range of mixes for each stage of your rats lives. Most of our mixes have egg or soya as the protein option, which protein option you choose is down to personal choice. The recommended amount to feed varies and will depends on your rats. The recommended amount to start adults on is 15-20g each per day and adjust as needed. Babies of homing age (7-8 weeks) will need 20g each per day until 16 weeks of age then adjust as needed.
Rat Mix No7 with egg or soya:
This is a mix created by Alison Campbell, the author of The Scuttling Gourmet. No7 is a mix suitable for rats of all ages, though rats under 12 weeks of age will need additional protein. This mix has a vast range of ingredients to make it exciting for the rats every meal time. This is a good mix for your rats if they love shrimp! Your rats will require supplements 2-3 times a week on this mix.
Rat Mix No8 with egg:
This is a mix also created by Alison Campbell. No8 is our kidney friendly mix, specially made with older rats in mind. Older rats can develop kidney issues, which can lead to Hind Leg Degeneration (HLD), weight loss and thinning fur. No8 contains less phosphorus making it easier on the kidneys. This mix is recommended for rats aged 18 months and over, though it can be given from 8 months of age. Your rats will require supplements 2-3 times a week on this mix.
Rat Mix No9:
This is another mix created by Alison Campbell. No9 was created for nursing mums and her babies. This mix is suitable for rats up to 14 weeks of age. It contains higher amounts of protein and all the goodness needed to aid your young rats through their main growing period. Nursing mums also require extra protein whilst feeding their babies. This shouldn't be given to older rats or mixed age groups due to the high protein and phosphorus. Nursing mums and babies require extra supplementation so 3-4 times a week is advised.
Rat Mix No11 with egg or soya:
This is a mix created by Mary Giles at Zephyr Stud. No11 is a mix suitable for rats of all ages, though rats under 12 weeks of age will need additional protein. This mix contains a long list of varied ingredients, ensuring your rats are never bored at meal times. This mix contains cereal and fruit. Your rats will require supplements 2-3 times a week on this mix.
Isa-Mixes:
We offer No7 and No11 in the form of Isa-Mixes. Isa-Mixes are a mix created by Jemma Fettes at Isamu Stud. These mixes require less supplementation due to Mr Johnsons Special Rabbit being fortified. We recommend supplementing these mixes 1-2 times a week. Due to these mixes being higher in phosphorus, we recommend considering switching to a kidney friendly mix when your rats reach 18 months of age.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF OUR DRY MIXES CONTAIN GARLIC - Garlic is NOT toxic to rats. Garlic has great health benefits for rats including heart and liver health. It can also aid in fighting infection. Garlic is also beneficial at keeping bugs away in mixes. Garlic is only included in small amounts.
Supplements:
Supplements can be given in two ways, in a wet meal or in their water.
CaCuD3: Previously called Dailyrat3, this is a supplement made specially for Rat Rations made up of Calcium, Copper and Vitamin D3. These are the things that homemade mixes are deficient in. This is NOT a water soluble supplement and must be given in wet meals. You can even mix it in with veg after washing so it sticks to the veg.
Calcivet Powder: A calcium supplement that is NOT water soluble and is to be given in a wet meal.
Daily Essentials 1 and Calcivet liquid: These are to be paired together in a water bottle or bowl and is often a favourite for rats. This should be given alongside their fresh water.
Soakable mixes -
No10 - Soft Food:
This is a soakable mix specially made for older or unwell rats. It is a balanced mix and can replace a dry mix if necessary.
Directions for use: Add the required amount of mix to a bowl (a dessert spoon is a good starting point), add hot water and allow to cool. If you require a thinner consistency, add more water. Supplements and oils can be stirred through.
Soakable Mix No20:
This mix was made with nursing mums and babies in mind. It is nutritionally complete and can replace a dry meal if needed but we advise feeding this alongside their main mix. It is packed with protein and is great for helping mum keep condition while feeding her babies and is also great for growing babies.
Directions for use: Add required amount to a bowl, cover with hot water and allow to cool. If a thinner consistency is required, add more water. Supplements and oils can be stirred through.
Moo-Mix:
Moo-mix was created by Jemma Fettes at Isamu Stud. Moo-Mix was created for older or unwell rats needing a boost and is designed for short term use. It is a very high calorie and nutritional wet meal. This mix can aid in gaining weight for older or unwell rats.
Directions for use: Add a dessert spoon of Moo-Mix to a bowl and slowly add freshly boiled water to get your desired consistency.
Allow to cool before feeding.
