Our base mixtures are designed to be used as part of a home made mix. Kittens and nursing does require a higher protein level so feeding a good quality wet kitten or dog food, pulses, eggs, mackerel, soya flakes and sardines are often recommended.

The general ratio of feeding a Straights Based Mix such as the Shunamite diet is:

  • Base 50% - 60%
  • Processed Grains 20% - 25%
  • Protein Source 5% - 10%
  • Herbs and Vegetables 5% -10%
  • Seeds - 5% (already added to Base Mix 3)

A supplement should be offered two to three times a week as most homemade mixtures are deficient in Calcium, Copper and Vitamin D.

Our CaCuD3 provides these in an easy to use powder form. We have found that mixing it into yoghurt or a wet meal such as fish or scrambled egg is the easiest way to ensure it is taken.

A water based option is to use Dr.S Daily Essentials 1 along with Dr.S Calcivet liquid. This should be given alongside their fresh water.

This recipe is supplied by Alison Campbell, Author of The Scuttling Gourmet book - a guide to healthy rat nutrition using the Shunamite style diet.
